Personal Training Experience Session: Sandbags with Marc

This month our Personal Training Experience Session comes from our new Hemel Hempstead Gymspace Supervisor, Marc! He talks us through why training with Sandbags is so beneficial to our everyday lives, take it away Marc…

 

The first thing you need to know about training with Sandbags is that it is great for building strength for the real world. Gym machines can be a fantastic resource for all aspects of our fitness requirements, but there are a few things that they don't cater for, one of those is developing grip strength!  Poor grip strength can cause problems for us in everyday life. We need grip strength to lift anything, in and around the home or at work. The sandbag offers the perfect built-in antidote to solve this issue, whereas other forms of training tools rely on additional programming to supplement. The sandbag will develop superior hand and grip strength for all trainees regardless of whether they’re beginners, athletes or older adults.

Sandbags are awkward! But being awkward to hold and lift is what makes the sandbag such an effective training tool. The weight is always shifting and will require more physical work to stabilise; this gives you far greater full body stimulation than with regular training.

The sandbag is not designed to make lifting an easy task; it will push you to work harder for each repetition you perform. This will give enormous benefits in the transfer to real world activities. It provides strength and conditioning gains that will benefit you when you step outside of the gym.

The major advantage to training with unstable equipment like sandbags, is that they have a much greater transfer over to the real world. Most loads in the real world are not equally distributed in weight. This training prepares your body for unstable loads. The sandbag has its own built-in instability making it a great choice to implement into your functional training regimen.

Shape me! The sandbag is malleable so it will mould to your body. Using barbells can sometimes put an unwanted strain upon the body, especially when performing exercises such as front and back squats, where the bar is resting across the chest in an uncomfortable position. Sandbags mould nicely on the front and back of the body making training a lot more comfortable. The sandbag can even replace other types of equipment like kettlebells for swings or for sprint drills by dragging the bag with a harness – definitely something you cannot do with a barbell.

At Gymspace we use Powerbag®, they are hard wearing and feature handles that allow you to do two handed and single handed exercises. We have them in weights ranging from 5kg-25kg, perfect for the beginner through to the elite athlete. To give you a bit of background sandbags have been used in fitness training for many years, ranging from athletes through to the military. In fact they have been used by the British Military for years as part of their Physical Selection Standards Recruits process.

Marc has been a Personal Trainer since 2001. His PT sessions are fun and personalised, using progressive plans that are tailored to your specific goals.

One of Marc’s clients was working in a stressful banking job, and had been clinically classed as morbidly obese. Her goals were to drop body fat, become more energetic, and be strong enough to perform a set of 10 pull-ups. Marc helped her adopt a positive mind set and lifestyle choices, and following his program she dropped 30% body fat! She can now handle multiple repetitions on the pull-up bar & gymnastic rings with ease! He loves to see the positive changes in his clients mind set and actions when they grasp the concept of mind-body connection, working on both physical and mental strength to improve their health and fitness.

In his spare time Marc enjoys practicing Kung Fu and yoga, playing in local charity football events and encouraging his children to be as active as possible.
