Personal Training Experience of the month: Boxing with Jess

The correct boxing technique takes practice and good instruction, our Personal Trainer Jess is the best person to get you on the road to being the next Anthony Joshua or Nicola Adams.  She will help you to perfect your upper cut and right hook, whilst working on your cardio, all the time burning a crazy amount of calories!

To give you an idea of what a boxing work out involves here are a few highlights:

  • Boxing is a workout that uses the entire body.
  • Boxing for one hour can burn more calories than using a stair climber for the same amount of time.
  • Every hook and jab engages your abdominals, obliques and lower back.
  • Simply punching works the biceps, triceps and deltoids to give your upper body a toned look.
  • Including boxing in your gym routine is a great way to increase your muscle mass and decrease your body fat, it can improve your overall body composition.

To really shred those calories you can add cardio movements such as squats and burpees into your boxing routine. So now there is no need to be lifting heavy weights all the time when you visit the gym, hitting a heavy punch bag is similar to weight training in principle, because it offers resistance.

Boxing isn’t just great for the fitness of the body; it’s also beneficial for a healthy mind and soul.  Boxing is well known to decrease stress; it’s an empowering feeling to punch your stresses away! There’s an incredibly cathartic release when you get to take some of your stress out on a punch bag. Boxing also helps to improve hand-eye coordination. This is particularly important during aging, as coordination and balance become compromised, increasing the risk of falls.

Jess loves to include Boxing in her work outs with her PT clients.  She is a motivated, friendly member of our team and is definitely the PT to get you floating like a butterfly whilst perfecting that sting like a bee. Jess’s Sportspace journey actually began as a Member. When she took out her Sportspace membership she was recovering from a spinal injury and wished to increase her energy levels and reduce her weight. Jess successfully lost 5 stones, regained her strength and mobility and discovered an enthusiasm for fitness and well-being. When it became time to return to work after staying at home with her children she felt it was only natural to re-skill as a Personal Trainer. She particularly enjoys working with those at the beginning of their fitness journey. Jess wishes to pass on her own experiences and success by helping her clients feel comfortable in the gym environment, whilst having a happy and motivated experience throughout their time at Gymspace.

Our Gymspace has a dedicated area for Boxing training which includes 3 punch bags of varying weights and shapes, gloves, pads and skipping ropes. If you are interested in taking your new Boxing skills to the next level, we also feature Fight Klub® sessions on our Group Exercise Timetable at Hemel Hempstead & Berkhamsted Sportspace. This class is a high-energy workout using a combination of boxing, kick boxing and Thai boxing techniques.
