It's never too late to get active!
From wanting to maintain your strength and remaining mobile, to keeping up with the grandchildren, and even just getting to the shops, everyone has their reasons for maintaining a level of fitness.
I visited our Senior Gym Members this month and it is evident that they love their designated Gymspace at Hemel Hempstead Sportspace and the older adult specific sessions that we provide. Their reasons for joining the gym varied from recovery and rehab for knee replacements, just wanting to join a gym to not wanting to be a ‘couch potato’ and being stuck at home.
Every Tuesday and Thursday the senior members come to Sportspace to have a workout. They use all the equipment, from the treadmill & exercise bikes to the cross trainer for their cardio, to the gym ball and weights to improve and prolong their strength and balance. They enjoy having the support of our Health & Fitness professionals, encouraging them to build and maintain their strength and in turn, boosting their confidence.
Keeping active in middle age is also the key to remaining independent later in life. The social aspect that comes with visiting the gym is a highlight to most of our older adult gym users. Using the gym is getting out of the house, keeping active in the community and enjoying a good old chat over a well-earned coffee in the Sportspace café after your work out.
Other members also enjoy the benefits from using our varied range of Group Exercise Classes, including Aqua Aerobics at Hemel & Berkhamsted Sportspace, and our Exercise for Health Sessions at locations such as Warners End Community Centre and Potten End Village Hall. The members that use these sessions that are based outside of the sport centres, felt that these sessions were very important to the community.
From my time spent in the senior gym sessions it was apparent that being part of Gymspace also means friendship; the gym is full of chatter and has a very positive atmosphere. It was great to see that so many of the members have been coming for over 10 years, some for nearly 20, and have built solid relationships from the time they spend here.
Sportspace provides a designated Gym just for Older Adults at Hemel Hempstead, so if you feel that using the main gym might be a bit intimidating we have the facilities and support just for you. Work out in your own space, at your own speed.
Exercise: good for the body, good for the mind.
Researchers from the University of Canberra have discovered that through exercise we provide the brain with a greater supply of blood, oxygen and nutrients that boosts brain health.
Partaking in exercise and physical activity has been noted to reduce the risk of diseases and conditions such as Hypertension, Stroke, Osteoporosis, Diabetes, Cancer, Depression & Dementia.
Exercise is also a good form of prevention, meaning that maintaining a level of fitness can halt health issues in their tracks before they arise.
NHS guidelines recommend that adults do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week and exercise the major muscles on two or more days. That is just 30 minutes a day over 5 days.
With a Sportspace Off Peak Membership you can have access to all of our Pools, the Gymspace and Group Exercise Classes everyday between 10am & 4pm, all for just £32 a month.
If you are interested in getting moving, but haven’t done much physical activity for a while, you may want to visit your GP before starting; here are a few recommended exercises for older people from the NHS.
Keeping yourself fit and active combined with healthy eating can lead to a fuller life, helping you to enjoy the simple pleasures for longer.
