Everyday Champion January 2017 - Leila WIlks
January 2017 Everyday Champion
Name: Leila Wilks
Nominated for: Determination to learn to swim and to learn the skills to teach basic swimming techniques so she can pass this knowledge on to orphans in her home city in the Philippines.
Our Swimming Teacher Ruth Spooner nominated Leila for our Everyday Champion because of her inspirational story. Leila came to our swimming lessons as a complete beginner with her son Jacky. They both survived the 2012 tsunami in the Philippines; unfortunately her husband lost his life in this disaster, alongside many others.
Having come close to death several times herself during this period, Leila is determined to learn how to swim and to teach swimming so she can pass on her knowledge to the orphans in her home city in the Philippines. Later this year she plans to go back to the Philippines to teach them how to swim. She has written a book about her experiences, feeling it very important to express the need for people to be able to swim, in order to save lives, this being her goal. (A book she hopes to have published very soon).
Ruth has taught Leila to swim and given her teaching techniques so she knows how to show others strokes and skills. Together Ruth and Leila have covered as many practises as Leila is comfortable with, she has in fact managed, floatation, front crawl, back crawl, breast stroke back and front and would you believe even butterfly, along with important water skills such as treading water etc.
Ruth said: “Leila is an amazing lady, such a privilege to be able to assist her on her journey to help others. How brave to face the water after such a tragic experience and great personal loss, her son Jacky also achieved his swimming skills, which is wonderful, they did it side by side”.
Leila, we are so proud of you and you are truly an inspiration to us all (staff and customers alike).
