We would like to make you aware of some important news regarding sport and leisure provision in your borough.
You may be aware that earlier in the year, Dacorum Borough Council (DBC) terminated our contract to run the leisure centres and athletics track, 7 years early. This was based on a recommendation from a Consultant who advised that DBC could save substantial sums of money.
Dacorum Sports Trust is a local not-for-profit organisation. Any surplus that is made, is not given to shareholders, but is re-invested in the community. Over the last 13 years, we have reduced the grant from the Council from £1.4m to just £225,000 in 2017/18 demonstrating how we have been able to add value, whilst still providing essential services.
We were extremely disappointed that DBC did not wish to negotiate with us regarding the contract, despite our requests.
On looking at the Council website for the Cabinet meeting tomorrow, we have seen a recommendation to award the new contract to a private organisation called Sport & Leisure Management (SLM). SLM are a national organisation with a turnover in excess of £150m per year. We are a local charity with volunteer Trustees from Dacorum, a charity who have successfully run the centres for the last 13 years and who have a turnover of £8m.
We would ask you to seriously consider whether you would like these services to be run by a private organisation whose aim will be to generate profit and pay shareholders, or whether you would prefer a local charity who only invest in the local community to be awarded the contract.
